Magnolia Power LLC is a new, start-of-the-art combined cycle power generating facility in Iberville Parish. The 700 MW generating station will use General Electric’s 7HA.03 advanced-class gas turbine in a one-on-one combined cycle configuration to provide best-in-class efficiency and emissions.
Job Overview:
The Operations Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power plant by monitoring and controlling plant systems and equipment. This position focuses primarily on operational duties, field rounds, and control room activities, with only limited involvement in maintenance-related tasks such as operational checks, tagging support, and minor adjustments. The Operations Technician works under established procedures to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor plant equipment and systems during start-up, normal operation, shutdown, and emergency conditions, including turbines, generators, boilers/HRSGs, condensers, boiler feed pumps, exciters, transformers, switchyard, and auxiliary systems.
- Perform routine operational rounds to inspect equipment, identify abnormal operating conditions, and verify proper system status.
- Monitor plant control systems, alarms, trends, and interlocks; respond to alarms and abnormal conditions in accordance with established procedures.
- Adjust valves, pumps, and equipment operating parameters as required to maintain safe and efficient plant operation.
- Communicate operating status, plant conditions, and abnormal events to the O&M Team Lead and plant management.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and operational documentation.
- Support maintenance activities by safely preparing equipment for maintenance, including lockout/tagout, system isolation, and operational verification before and after maintenance work.
- Perform limited, non-invasive maintenance-related tasks such as basic operational checks, visual inspections, and simple adjustments when directed.
- Maintain basic boiler and plant cycle chemistry awareness by reviewing operational data and reporting out-of-spec conditions to supervision or chemistry support personnel.
- Use the work management system to review work orders, enter operational comments, support clearances, and document plant activities.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high-voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
- Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts, with the possibility of weekend and holiday work; as required by schedules, work load, and Plant conditions.
- All employees will participate in the Fitness-for-Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 6 to 12 months of power plant operations experience, or equivalent industrial operations experience, and a high school diploma or GED.
- An Associate Degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical, Electrical, or a related technical field is a plus.
- Previous experience in gas turbine, combined cycle, or thermal power plant operations is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of power plant operating principles, including start-up, normal operation, and shutdown.
- Ability to recognize abnormal equipment conditions and take appropriate operational action.
- Basic understanding of plant systems, instrumentation, alarms, and control logic.
- Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, one-line diagrams, and basic prints.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Must possess a valid State driver’s license.
