SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Chemist, under the limited supervision of the Lab Manager, performs experiments and analyses to find solutions to plant problems, improve processes, ensures raw material and product quality, and supports environmental requirements. The incumbent also develops new analytical methods and implements new instrumentation and technology as needed. They will act as plant technical advisor and customer product representative for analytical and chemical related issues. The incumbent acts as an effective team member, cooperating with and helping other chemists and technicians in problem solving whenever possible.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with safety in mind for both you and your colleagues. Supports lab safety initiatives and promotes safety in our satellite labs. Follow all safety documentation such as policies, SOP's, SDS', etc.
- Work as primary Inorganic chemist, specializing in wet chemistry analysis of solids and liquids including digestion of samples for metals analysis.
- Work as primary instrument chemist for metals analysis by ICP and AA spectroscopy.
- Assist with department quality (ISO) and HSSE audits, and housekeeping.
- Maintains all laboratory equipment within effective calibration status and oversees maintenance and repair by vendors, including internal spare parts inventory for critical instrumentation, service contracts, including contracts for calibration of instrumentation by third party vendors and scheduling vendor onsite visits and factory repairs.
- Provide instrumentation troubleshooting support for daily operations of Main Lab, Satellite Labs, and on-line analytical equipment.
- Evaluate and implement new analytical technology for continual improvement of laboratory capability, accuracy and efficiency.
- Report analytical data / feedback to management and plant internal customers on a timely basis. Issue full written reports as needed.
- Provide back-up support for other Chemists during their absence.
- Revises and/or reviews existing analytical procedures and develops and writes new procedures where necessary and trains laboratory personnel in those new procedures.
- Act as weekly chemist on call (monthly rotation). Available for weekend, holiday and emergency call outs.
KEY SKILLS:
- Strong organizational skills; strong communications skills (both oral & written).
- Strong knowledge of laboratory analytical instruments & techniques.
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills in a fast-paced environment while managing priorities.
- Able and willing to be a team player.
- Strong statistical background.
- Strong proponent of scientific method for the solution of process & analytical problems; "Proactive, resourceful, and enterprising" attitude along with sense of urgency on solving problems.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum: BS in Chemistry
- Minimum: Two years of analytical chemistry experience
- QC experience preferred: ISO9001 environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiar with ISO, ASTM, EPA standards, guidelines and applications
- Familiar with typical laboratory developed methods
- Familiar with LabWare or similar Lab management software
- Familiar with document management systems
- Familiar with purchasing lab material and supplies protocols
